In all likelihood I was listening to jazz before I ever entered this world. My mother would turn on the local jazz station first thing in the morning and it stayed on until after dinner. I discovered rock music by the time I was about five years old. That was only a matter of exposure as it was played on the AM stations my brother and I heard when we had the choice. At my father’s encouragement I explored rock and roll and doo-wop at about age seven. Since that time I’ve recognized the difference between rock music and “rock and roll” (there was no rock music before The Beatles album Revolver and very little rock and roll afterwards). By about sixth grade I was introduced to progressive radio through the thoughtfulness of my aunt who made me aware that I shouldn’t only listen to top forty stations. Prog-rock didn’t last long so, by high school I had reversed course and returned to what was soon to be known as classic-rock. This time however I became interested in what these groups and musicians listened to when they were young. That’s how I became familiar with the blues and R&B. Initially I shunned the punk movement but, when it evolved into “new wave”, I was hooked. Fortunately, as I was living near the Canadian border, I was able to receive stations from the Toronto area. These days I’ll give almost anything a try but, just one try in many cases. I continue to delve into the past as well as restore vinyl records. There is so much music to hear, I continue to find new thrills among old recordings. I studied Materials Science: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering and eventually earned a degree in Communications Electronics.
