I was born in Susanville California 1957. I was still an infant when my parents moved to Denver Colorado. I was told as a child I never let anything stop me from what I wanted to do and that still holds true today. It seemed that rhythm was always with me early in life.

At 5yrs old, my mom started taking me to parades and asking me what instruments I would like to play, I replied the drums. This was part of my awaking to music as I already had been exposed to all types of music in my family. My uncles would always be playing Ray Charles, Otis Redding or early artist from the 60’s R&B and Jazz. I learned to listen to music and not just hear it for the beat; this was the part of knowing what the music was saying (Lyric content).

I grew up appreciating music and would imagine sometimes I would be playing those tunes on the radio. When I was a teenager I use to have a job as a janitor and one of the buildings I had to take care of had a radio studio in it. I’d talk to the DJ which they were referred to at that time and just watch and listen to see how things were done.

As a teenager I had a sound system that had a mixer button as a feature on the component. This would allow me to mix in my voice with the music I would record. I would make believe I was a DJ and had call letters to make it even more real (KXX) which when said out loud it would sound like ‘K double X’ as you know it was missing one letter to make up the full radio address but it was all in my dreams along with having fun. It sounded good to me and anyone that would hear it playing in my car. It was so funny when someone would hear the music and this DJ speaking about the tune they just heard. They were amazed by the station they believed was real and asked what station it was. I would reply mine. Although it was a great “station”, most would say I never heard of it or the DJ. I went by the name of CD the Doctor which is still the name I go by on A Funk Above the Rest and now as well as Doctor Fusion. Wow! Who would have thought!

The power of Jazz Fusion:

This era of jazz has not died only the artist still have a vision on what took place in this time period. Never mistake the melodic and mystical vibes of what artist were hearing in their plight to create music that was often not understood by the novice. Musicianship at its finest as far as I’m concerned; it took your mind and thoughts into another level of musical thinking.

Artists you will hear on this show include Billy Cobham, Miles Davis, Weather Report, George Duke, Brian Bromberg, Jaco Pastorius Chick Corea, plus many, many more.
